Elle's review: Salt Yard, Noho

Salt Yard at 54 Goodge Street, to its credit, doesn't look much from the outside. The simple mahogany exterior and classic typeface front gives way to 2 storey, silver-service, quiet elegance. The setting is the perfect context for a rich and interesting menu which takes classic Spanish tapas as its foundation but augments it with both the usual 'fusion' suspects (think soft shell crab), and foods that are having a moment (salted caramel mouse).

I went down there for an intimate leaving do with some colleagues and it delivered the perfect combination of sophistication and comfort food that we required. My favourite thing about tapas is that it's socially acceptable to order and to eat almost everything on the menu. See below for the colourful array of dishes that we tried. Everything was cooked to perfection and their attention to detail both in terms of presentation and nuanced flavours was spot on.

Apologies for the iphone shots - I didn't bring the pap camera to work.

The scallops with crisp pancetta and hazlenut puree.

The slow cooked beef cheek in potato puree with seville carrots. In the background you can glimpse the triple cooked patatas with fresh tomato puree and aioli. These were deliciously naughty.

The squash, lambs lettuce and goats curd salad.

The lamb with poached pear and parmesan.

and as if that wasn't enough, we stayed for dessert too...

The perfect trio of flourless chocolate cake, salted caramel mouse and pistachio ice cream.

Panna cotta with raspberry and almond nougat.

Rice pudding with peach and pistachio.
Salt yard is the perfect 'oh, I know a little place around the corner' spot, especially as it's so close to Barrica (also equisite, but more traditional). So if you're in Goodge Street and in the mood for tapas, you're likely to be able to walk into one of these. If you go later in the week or for a lunch, I'd recommend booking here and of course, leaving room for dessert.

I'd like to dedicate this post to the lovely Sharon Powell who we said bye to at Salt Yard last week. She's going on to a very exciting future but she will be sorely missed.
